How to Make Coffee Without Filter Or Paper Towel: (8 Ways)

Eight ways to brew coffee without a filter or paper towel.

1) Instant Coffee:

For starters, your first choice would be instant coffee. Whip up a small amount of instant coffee powder to satisfy your daily dose of caffeine. However, it’s not everyone’s favorite, but it’s easy, quick, and something you always have in your drawer.

Instant coffees have improved their quality over the past few years but confuse ‘coffee crystals’ with instant coffee because the latter one’s not in powdered form.

2) Make Turkish Coffee:

Turkish coffee is one of my favorites that requires no filters to enjoy. It’s well known throughout Middle Eastern countries and is made using copper coffee pots.

Turkish coffee is served in small pots with 2-3 ounces of coffee. The only thing distinguishing Turkish coffee from all others is that it is not stirred during the brewing process or when consumed.

Milk or any other sweetener is added to the coffee powder before brewing, so it is not common to add cream or sugar to this coffee before drinking.

To make Turkish coffee at home, follow these steps:

  • Add water per person and a fine coffee powder to your copper pot.
  • Add sugar and stir it to mix with the coffee powder and water.
  • Place it on medium heat until the coffee begins to foam.
  • Remove it before the coffee starts boiling and skim the foam from the top.
  • Add the foam to each of the cups.
  • And put the coffee back on the heat until it foams again.
  • Now, pour it into the cups carefully, so the foam comes to the top of the cups.
  • Leave the cups for a few seconds, so settle before serving.
  • Avoid stirring the coffee during the foaming process, or when it’s on the table, it’s the Turkish tradition.

You can add a cardamom pod to your coffee while brewing to enjoy your Turkish coffee even more.

3) Cowboy Coffee:

Don’t own a coffee machine? No worries. Make yourself a nice cup of cowboy coffee. Like Turkish coffee, cowboy coffee also uses boiling water and coffee grounds, but without filtering. You keep the coffee at a specific temperature, and then you carefully pour the coffee into your cup, keeping most of the grounds out of your coffee cup.

Use these tips to enjoy a nice cup of cowboy coffee:

  • Add water to the pot. Take a bit more than usual water as some will evaporate while boiling.
  • Boil water, and then add coffee grounds according to the cups of coffee you want to make. I would suggest two tablespoons for each cup.
  • Let it boil until the grounds settle at the bottom of the pot.
  • Cover the pot with a lid and stop the heat to let it settle.
  • Now, remove the lid and carefully pour the coffee into the cups so as not to rise the grounds from the bottom.

French Press:

Don’t have coffee filters? No worries. Treat yourself to a fancy cup of coffee with your French Press. One of the most amazing things about French Press is that it allows some of the coffee oil into your cup, giving an exquisite taste.

Follow these steps to make yourself a decent cup of coffee using French Press:

  • You can use a microwave, electric cattle, or stove to boil water and coffee grounds.
  • Remove the lid from your press to add the desired amount of coffee grounds.
  • Now, add the boiling water and stir.
  • Place the lid back and lower the filter to the water’s surface.
  • Let it steep for a few minutes.
  • Push it slowly so that you don’t disturb the coffee grounds.
  • Pour it into your cup and enjoy!

Best Coffee Filter Substitutes:

1) A Washed Dish Towel or Cloth Napkin:

Believe it or not, coffee filter substitutes include everyday household items. All you need to take care of is that they are washed and not treated with chemicals.

A clean dish towel or a cloth napkin is a good coffee filter alternative. Still, you need to ensure that the cloth is not being washed using chemically formed detergents because that can compromise the taste of your coffee.

If you plan on reusing the cloth, rinse it well and let it dry properly.

2) Paper Towels:

We do not suggest using paper towels. Although they’re sustainable, there are many chances they are treated with chemicals that can compromise the taste of your coffee.

Also, they can burst with hot water and let the coffee grounds into your cup, leaving you with a lot of mess to clean. So, it’s a straight-up no.

3) Reusable Filters:

Reusable filters are a perfect choice depending on your caffeine requirements. Not only will it reduce waste, but it will also cut down the cost you spend buying paper towels or coffee filters every week.

They are cost-efficient and easy on the environment. That makes reusable filters an excellent choice to fulfill your coffee requirement.

4) A Fine Mesh Sieve:

A fine mesh sieve can serve as a suitable coffee filter substitute. As we’ve explained earlier, make your coffee, and then pour it slowly using the sieve. It will capture almost all the coffee grounds. For more effectiveness, you can place a piece of cheesecloth over the sieve to catch them all.

5) Reusable Tea Bags:

You might also have a few reusable tea bags at your home if you are a tea drinker. They also make a pretty good substitute for coffee filters or paper towels.

All you have to do is to add a few tablespoons of good ground coffee to your tea bag, seal it up, and add it into the pot of boiling water. Let it steep for a few minutes, and there you have your freshly brewed coffee.

This method is mess-free and lets very few coffee grounds into your cup. Also, you don’t have to worry about the chemicals destroying the taste of your coffee. But this method would be a no-go if you’re not a tea drinker.

6) Handkerchief:

If you don’t have a coffee filter, you can brew your coffee using a handkerchief as long as it’s clean. This acts like a paper towel or napkin, but good cotton stuff would make a suitable substitute. Make sure that it’s free of detergents and chemicals.

7) Coffee Powder:

Coffee powder is coffee that has been ground into a fine powder. It’s like espresso powder, but it’s even better. There are plenty of methods to make coffee using coffee powder instead of a coffee filter.

Bottom Line:

As you can see, there are plenty of clever and easy ways to brew coffee without a filter or paper towel. You don’t even need a coffeemaker to do that.

Everyday household items like reusable tea bags, handkerchiefs, or a fine mesh sieve can make all the difference.

Let us know what’s your favorite method. Until next time!
